Overview
- Emergency services were called at about 5:40pm on Wednesday after a crash on the northbound carriageway between junctions 4 and 5.
- One vehicle left the motorway and came to rest in a ditch with a man and a woman trapped inside suffering multiple injuries.
- GMFRS deployed three fire engines and an Enhanced Rescue Unit, using winching and cutting equipment to free both casualties before NWAS transported them to hospital.
- The motorway was closed in both directions, with National Highways describing the incident as severe and implementing diversion routes between junctions 2 and 4.
- Greater Manchester Police confirmed a total of five vehicles were involved, all were recovered, and the motorway reopened at around midnight.
