Overview
- USGS recorded the new magnitude 5.6 event on Sept. 4 near the earlier epicentral area, 36 km west-southwest of Asadabad at a depth of 10 km.
- The Aug. 31 magnitude 6.0 earthquake left at least 2,205 dead and 3,640 injured in Kunar, according to the Taliban provisional government.
- Casualties have also been confirmed in neighboring Nangarhar province following the initial quake.
- Reporters on the ground say many small settlements still have not received aid, with survivors sleeping outside in rain and fearing aftershocks.
- Authorities and humanitarian sources caution that continued seismic activity and fragile slope-side structures could expand the damage.
