M5 Wellington Drainage Works Start Oct. 20 With 50mph Limits and Planned Night Closures

The £5.9m scheme targets flooding near Junction 26 with upgrades designed to improve wet‑weather safety.

Overview

  • National Highways has published a detailed timetable of overnight lane reductions and full closures between junctions 25 and 27 from late October through February 2026.
  • Traffic will be kept in three narrowed lanes through the work area with 24‑hour 50mph limits northbound from October 28 to February 19 and southbound from November 2 to February 11.
  • When closures are in place, signed diversions will send southbound traffic from J25 to J27 via the A358 and A38, with northbound traffic using the same route in reverse.
  • The works will include ditch de‑silting, camera surveys, gully renewal, replacement of blocked drainage pipes, resurfacing and new road markings to improve resilience.
  • The programme follows Somerset Council’s concrete renewal and the Chelston link road works to avoid peak‑summer overlap, with drivers and businesses urged to plan for delays.
