M5 EV Transporter Fire and M25 Heathrow Crash Cause Prolonged Closures, Heavy Delays

Extended recovery operations follow a Devon lorry fire involving electric vehicles plus a serious M25 collision near Heathrow.

Overview

  • Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue said a car transporter carrying nine electric vehicles caught fire on the M5 between J28 (Cullompton) and J29 (Exeter) around 6:30am, closing both carriageways.
  • Fire crews confirmed the blaze was extinguished and National Highways reopened the M5 northbound at about 10:15am, with the southbound side remaining closed for recovery and monitoring.
  • National Highways issued signed diversion routes and warned of lengthy queues and delays near Exeter, with impacts for motorists heading to Exeter Airport.
  • On the M25, all clockwise lanes at J14 for Heathrow have been shut since before 5am after a car–lorry collision; London Fire Brigade said one man was freed by firefighters and taken to hospital.
  • Authorities said the M25 closure would last into the afternoon with ‘up and over’ diversions and hour‑long delays, as separate incidents in Greater Manchester and on the M6 also caused morning queues.
