M4.0 Earthquake Rattles Loreto With No Reported Damage

Seismologists say Peru should stay prepared because long-term energy buildup on the central coast raises the risk of a much larger quake.

Overview

  • A magnitude 4.0 earthquake struck 125 km northwest of Andoas in Loreto at 1:38 p.m. on Friday, October 23, 2026, and occurred at a depth of about 141 km, according to the Instituto Geofísico del Perú.
  • Defensa Civil and the National Emergency Operations Center (COEN) monitored the event and reported no injuries or material damage after initial checks.
  • The IGP has released multiple technical bulletins in mid–late October that list a string of small-to-moderate quakes across Peru and provide real-time data on magnitude, depth, coordinates and estimated intensity.
  • Sismologist César Jiménez Tintaya warned that the central coast has accumulated tectonic energy since the 1746 megathrust event and said the region could still produce a very large earthquake in the future.
  • Authorities and INDECI are using recent activity to push preparedness measures such as evacuation plans, emergency backpacks stocked with water and first-aid supplies, and keeping official emergency numbers at hand.
