M3GAN Director Gerard Johnstone to Helm Live-Action Monster High Film

Mattel Studios has hired Gerard Johnstone to reboot its doll franchise with an original monster-inspired story in partnership with Universal Pictures.

  • Gerard Johnstone, known for directing M3GAN and its upcoming sequel, has been tapped to direct the live-action Monster High adaptation for Mattel Studios, Universal Pictures and Akiva Goldsman’s Weed Road banner.
  • The film will present an original narrative based on Mattel’s 2010 fashion-doll line, depicting the teenage children of legendary monsters navigating life at a fictional high school.
  • Robbie Brenner, President and Chief Content Officer of Mattel Studios, and Oscar-winning screenwriter Akiva Goldsman will serve as producers on the project.
  • Johnstone’s first M3GAN installment grossed over $180 million worldwide and his follow-up, M3GAN 2.0, is slated to hit theaters on June 27.
  • Monster High joins a slate of 15 films announced by Mattel Studios, which also has two live-action movies—Masters of the Universe and Matchbox—in active production.
