M3.8 Quake Shakes Suwanosejima as Tokara Swarm Persists

Officials warn that tremors capable of intensity-5 shaking remain possible for about a week.

  • At 5:34 a.m. local time on Sept. 21, Suwanosejima recorded intensity 3 shaking from a magnitude 3.8 earthquake at a depth of about 10 km.
  • There was no tsunami risk reported from the Sept. 21 event.
  • Light shaking at intensity 1 was observed on Nakano-shima and Akusekijima during the Sept. 21 quake.
  • A day earlier, at 1:02 p.m. on Sept. 20, a very shallow magnitude 3.0 quake also produced intensity 3 shaking on Suwanosejima.
  • Seismic activity has continued since an intensity-5-minus quake on Sept. 17, and the Japan Meteorological Agency advises caution for roughly a week.
