Overview
- The M25 logged over 27,300 breakdowns in 2024, equal to 238 failures per mile, the highest rate of any UK motorway.
- The M1 saw 40,454 incidents overall but ranked third by frequency with 202 breakdowns per mile.
- The M23, M27 and M32 also featured among the top five breakdown hotspots, recording 224, 200 and 143 failures per mile respectively.
- By contrast, the A329(M) had the lowest incident rate at 20 failures per mile and the A1(M) registered 63 per mile last year.
- Experts advise motorists to carry emergency kits and to check tyres, lights, fluid levels and battery health before embarking on long journeys.
