Overview
- The LUX-ZEPLIN collaboration, which presented the result on Wednesday, September 2, 2026, found one particle interaction in a reanalysis of 220 days of data collected from March 2023 to April 2024.
- The event produced a nuclear-recoil–like signature in LZ’s roughly 10-ton liquid xenon target that the team says is hard to match with ordinary particle backgrounds.
- Statistical strength for the signal is modest at about 2.6 sigma, a level far below the roughly 5-sigma standard particle physicists use to claim a discovery.
- LZ has run months of internal checks, presented the analysis at TeV Particle Astrophysics 2026, and submitted a paper to Physical Review Letters while continuing detailed background studies and inviting outside scrutiny.
- If interpreted as a WIMP under the models tested, the candidate would be relatively heavy (order of >200 proton masses), but that mass estimate and any claim about dark matter will require independent confirmation from new data or other experiments.
