Overview

  • The agreement transfers all remaining Swedish and German Northvolt factories and related intellectual property to Lyten, expanding its footprint by about 16 GWh of operating capacity and 15 GWh under construction.
  • By acquiring assets at distressed valuations without assuming Northvolt’s debts, Lyten strengthened its balance sheet and secured facilities at steep discounts.
  • Production is set to resume with conventional lithium-ion cells before the sites are converted to Lyten’s lithium-sulfur batteries, which promise lower mineral intensity and lighter weight.
  • Lyten intends to rehire many of the European workers laid off after Northvolt’s bankruptcy to help rebuild regional manufacturing ecosystems.
  • Key challenges include undisclosed transaction terms, lingering operational hurdles, pending regulatory approvals and the need to rebuild customer relationships in a competitive battery market.
