Luxury Cars Smuggled From Paraguay Seized in Buenos Aires Raids

Investigators say the network abused Mercosur tourist vehicle rules to park foreign-registered cars in Argentina for commercial use.

Overview

  • Customs agents confiscated two Chevrolet Camaro and two Ford Mustang with Paraguayan plates plus a Toyota SW4, a fleet valued at more than AR$500 million.
  • Two Argentine suspects were detained and held incommunicado as officers also seized AR$30 million in cash, US$20,000 and an unregistered firearm.
  • Five court-ordered searches across the Buenos Aires metro area were authorized by Judge Marcelo Cardozo and directed by Prosecutor Marcelo Bernachea, with participation from Customs, the City Police, Migraciones and the DGI.
  • The vehicles appeared in music videos and were rented for productions linked to artists such as L-Gante, La Joaqui and Eugenia “La China” Suárez, though the inquiry centers on importation, ownership and commercialization rather than the performers.
  • The case, launched after an alert in Paso de los Libres, proceeds under aggravated smuggling charges under Article 865 of the Customs Code with potential penalties of up to 10 years as financial and asset traces are pursued.
