Lush Shuts All UK Stores, Website and Factories for a Day in Gaza Solidarity

The company framed the one-day shutdown as a response to UN famine warnings, urging the UK to halt arms sales to Israel.

Overview

  • The retailer closed roughly 102 shops, its UK e-commerce site and its factories on Wednesday, 3 September, with windows stating: "Stop starving Gaza — we are closed in solidarity."
  • Lush called for stronger UK government action to stop the "death and destruction," including ending arms exports to Israel, and highlighted the loss of a day’s tax receipts from its takings.
  • Co-founder and chief executive Mark Constantine estimated the closure would cost around £300,000, and the company said agency staff were paid for the day.
  • The brand will relaunch its Watermelon Slice fundraising soap, directing proceeds to medical services and prosthetic limb support for people injured in Gaza.
  • UK operations were set to resume on Thursday, 4 September, and the company said other Lush markets may consider similar actions.
