Overview

  • On July 15, Nyong’o disclosed that she had 30 uterine fibroids removed in 2014 and remains at risk of recurrence.
  • She joined Rep. Yvette Clarke, Rep. Shontel Brown and other Congressional Black Caucus members to unveil legislation directing $150 million over five years toward NIH-funded fibroid research, early detection and patient education.
  • Nyong’o partnered with the Foundation for Women’s Health to launch the FWH x Lupita Nyong’o Uterine Fibroid Research Grant aimed at developing minimally invasive and non-invasive treatment options.
  • Emphasizing the disproportionate impact on Black women, she urged the rejection of normalized menstrual pain in favor of early education, better screening protocols and prevention research.
  • Her advocacy builds on the long-standing efforts of the late Rep. Stephanie Tubbs Jones and renews momentum for comprehensive federal action on women’s reproductive health.
