Luna Luna, the Artist-Designed Amusement Park, Revived in New York
The iconic 1987 avant-garde art park, featuring works by Basquiat, Haring, and Dalí, has been restored and is now open at The Shed until January 5, 2025.
- Originally conceived by Austrian artist André Heller, Luna Luna debuted in Hamburg in 1987 as a fusion of art and amusement, featuring attractions designed by renowned artists like Jean-Michel Basquiat, Keith Haring, and Salvador Dalí.
- After decades of obscurity, the park's disassembled rides were rediscovered in 44 shipping containers in Texas, prompting a $100 million restoration funded by Drake’s DreamCrew and Live Nation.
- The New York exhibition showcases 13 restored attractions alongside a new installation by Puerto Rican artist duo Poncilí Creación, though visitors cannot interact with the fragile original rides.
- Highlights include Basquiat’s Ferris wheel referencing jazz and racism, Dalí’s mirrored dome pavilion, and Haring’s carousel adorned with his signature radiant baby imagery.
- The exhibition will continue to tour after its New York run, with plans to adapt and reconfigure the installations to tell unique stories at each location.
