Lula Purges Centrão Appointees as Chamber Support Slides Before 2026

The government is using dismissals to enforce loyalty across second- and third-tier posts.

Overview

  • GLOBO’s voting tally shows weaker adherence to the government in the Chamber: MDB fell from 75% in 2023 to 61% this year, PP from 65% to 58%, União Brasil from 60% to 51%, and PSD is down to about 68% in 2025.
  • An alternative IOF measure lost validity after a decisive defeat in the Chamber, sharpening the rift and requiring budget recomposition, with the LDO review postponed at the government’s request, according to Senator Efraim Filho.
  • The Planalto has executed more than 40 dismissals of Centrão-linked nominees, targeting DNOCS, Sudene, DNIT, ANTT, FNDE, Iphan, the ANM and the Manaus Free Trade Zone, with additional changes at Caixa’s vice presidencies reported as expected but not yet official.
  • The shake-up includes the Agriculture Ministry removing PSD-backed superintendents in Minas Gerais, Pará, Paraná, Maranhão and Tocantins, the Integration Ministry ousting eight appointees in DNOCS and Sudene, and DNIT replacing the Roraima superintendency tied to an MDB deputy.
  • While support erodes in the Chamber, the Senate remains comparatively aligned, with President Davi Alcolumbre acting as a key interlocutor and seeking to advance Rodrigo Pacheco for a Supreme Court seat as center-right parties reposition for 2026 and Tarcísio de Freitas gains traction.
