Overview

  • Märtens will line up in the 400m freestyle, 200m backstroke and 800m freestyle when pool competition opens on July 27 in Singapore.
  • He opted out of the 200m freestyle to ensure adequate recovery after his record-breaking 400m swim and the packed race timetable.
  • The three-event program was confirmed just before the entry deadline in close consultation with national coach Bernd Berkhahn.
  • In April he set a world record of 3:39.96 in the 400m freestyle, becoming the first swimmer to break 3:40.
  • This season he holds the world-year’s third-fastest time in the 200m free and ranks second in the 800m behind European record-holder Sven Schwarz.
