Luigi the BC Ferries Cat Found Safe After 15-Day Search

The reunion followed a coordinated search led by Halo’s Pet Rescue with support from BC Ferries staff.

Overview

  • Luigi was located Sunday under a trailer at the Tsawwassen terminal after workers reported sightings and food left out had been eaten.
  • BC Ferries commercial services driver Jeff Meier photographed the cat near the trucking yard, prompting Halo’s Pet Rescue to deploy with tracking dog Halo.
  • Owner Neelya Herbert arrived from Vernon, called to Luigi, and he emerged from hiding for a safe reunion, and she reported he was healthy with no injuries.
  • The cat slipped out of a slightly open vehicle window on Aug. 9 during a Duke PointTsawwassen sailing, remaining missing for about 15 days.
  • Search efforts used bait stations, cameras and timed ferry checks limited to off-service periods under Transport Canada rules, with BC Ferries publicly thanking crews and volunteers.
