Luge World Cup Opener Moved to Winterberg After Innsbruck-Igls Fails FIL Homologation

Safety faults in curves 13 and 14 persisted despite a €30 million rebuild.

Overview

  • The FIL said a second homologation attempt failed after days of remedial work, so the Dec. 5–7 opener will run in Winterberg.
  • Austria’s federation called the situation a “disaster” and said substantial reconstruction and further investment now appear necessary.
  • Two-time world champion Jonas Müller reported severe line problems and hard hits in testing, leading the ÖRV to halt participation in further runs.
  • Temporary fixes such as narrowing curves 13 and 14 with wooden boards and reworking the ice profile were judged insufficient for luge safety.
  • Bob and skeleton races set for Nov. 28–30 await separate IBSF approval, while a dispute over who pays for additional fixes could head to court.
