Lufthansa Group Enforces Stricter Powerbank Rules Across All Carriers

The policy implements updated EASA guidance to cut cabin battery-fire risk.

Overview

  • The tightened policy took effect on 15 January 2026 and applies across Lufthansa, Swiss, Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines, Eurowings, Discover, Edelweiss and Air Dolomiti.
  • Passengers may carry a maximum of two powerbanks only in hand luggage, with no placement in checked bags or in overhead bins.
  • On board, powerbanks must be kept on the person, in the seat pocket or under the seat, and they may not be used or charged during the flight.
  • Capacity limits align with international thresholds: up to 100 Wh allowed, 100–160 Wh only with airline approval, and over 160 Wh prohibited.
  • The same transport and usage rules apply to e‑cigarettes, with medically necessary batteries eligible for exemptions and passenger notices sent before flights.
