Lufthansa Group Enforces Stricter In-Flight Powerbank Rules From Jan. 15

The carrier says the change follows updated EASA/FAA safety recommendations.

Overview

  • Using or charging powerbanks on board is now prohibited across all Lufthansa Group airlines, including Swiss, Austrian, Brussels Airlines, Eurowings, Discover, Edelweiss and Air Dolomiti.
  • Powerbanks are allowed only in carry-on, limited to two per passenger, with up to 100 Wh permitted without approval, 100–160 Wh requiring airline approval, and anything above 160 Wh banned.
  • On board, powerbanks must be kept on the person, in the seat pocket, or under the seat, with storage in overhead bins no longer allowed.
  • The same transport and storage rules apply to e‑cigarettes, with exemptions possible for medically necessary batteries under the airline’s process.
  • Passengers are being notified via pre‑flight emails and onboard announcements, with guidance to check device labels for Wh ratings or convert mAh to Wh to confirm compliance.
