Lufthansa Group Bans In-Flight Powerbank Use, Tightens Carry-On Rules

The policy, effective Jan. 15, implements lithium-ion safety guidance across the group's airlines.

Overview

  • The rules take effect Jan. 15, 2026 across Lufthansa, Swiss, Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines, Eurowings, Air Dolomiti, Edelweiss and Discover Airlines.
  • Using or charging powerbanks during flights is no longer allowed, with an exception for medically necessary devices.
  • Powerbanks are permitted only in carry-on baggage and remain prohibited in checked luggage.
  • In the cabin, powerbanks must be carried on the person, in the seat-back pocket, or under the seat, and they may not be stored in overhead bins.
  • Units up to 100 Wh are allowed without approval, 100–160 Wh require airline consent, larger capacities are excluded, and trade reports cite a two-powerbank limit with parallel rules for e‑cigarettes.
