Lufthansa Brings Ground Handling In-House at Munich With Swissport Losch Takeover

The carrier says tighter control of turnarounds is intended to boost punctuality for more reliable operations.

Overview

  • The move covers a portion of Lufthansa flights at its Munich hub following the acquisition of Swissport Losch.
  • Around 600 Swissport Losch employees will transfer to Lufthansa on a long-term basis under sector collective agreements.
  • Most Lufthansa services in Munich will continue to be handled by Aeroground, a subsidiary of Flughafen München GmbH.
  • EU rules require at least two competing ground handlers at major airports, permitting airline self-handling within that framework.
  • In-house work now includes loading, cabin cleaning and fueling, with the deal first announced in February and now completed.
