Lucky to Close Bayview’s Only Major Grocery Store on Nov. 1

The loss hits a neighborhood long designated by the USDA as low-income with limited food access.

Overview

  • District 10 Supervisor Shamann Walton announced the shutdown of the Lucky at 3801 Third St., set for Nov. 1.
  • A store manager, who declined to be identified, confirmed the closure to the San Francisco Chronicle with no additional details provided.
  • Walton said he will work with the Office of Economic and Workforce Development to bring grocery and pharmacy services back to the site.
  • The Bayview location opened in 2022 in a former Walgreens and is part of Lucky’s California operations under Save Mart, which keeps two other San Francisco stores.
  • The move follows other local grocery exits, including Safeway’s Fillmore closure earlier this year, with a free District 10 Community Market and a weekly farmers market offering limited stopgaps.
