Lucky to Close Bayview San Francisco Store on Nov. 1

City officials are moving to recruit a replacement for a low-access neighborhood.

Overview

  • Save Mart Companies confirmed the 3801 Third St. store will shut Nov. 1 and said employees will be offered positions at nearby locations based on seniority and availability.
  • District 10 Supervisor Shamann Walton said he is in talks with Save Mart to try to pause the shutdown and will work with the city’s Office of Economic and Workforce Development to restore grocery and pharmacy services at the site.
  • The closure will leave the Bayview without a major supermarket in a neighborhood the USDA classifies as low-income, low-access, with remaining options including Mi Rancho, Grocery Outlet and Foods Co.
  • The Bayview Plaza location opened in October 2022 in a former Walgreens and operates in a smaller footprint than typical Lucky stores at about 9,549 square feet.
  • Lucky has not given a reason for exiting the site; a Walton aide suggested the small-format store likely underperformed relative to larger locations.
