Lucas Museum Sets Sept. 22, 2026 Opening in Los Angeles

A $1 billion, privately funded build now moves into its final installation phase.

Overview

  • George Lucas and Mellody Hobson’s institution will debut in Exposition Park on an 11‑acre campus anchored by a 300,000‑square‑foot building.
  • Thirty‑five galleries totaling 100,000 square feet will present more than 40,000 works spanning illustration, comics, painting, photography and film artifacts.
  • The museum will house the Lucas Archives, including models, props, costumes and full‑scale Star Wars vehicles alongside posters and concept art.
  • Designed by Ma Yansong of MAD with landscape by Mia Lehrer’s Studio‑MLA, the site adds two theaters, a multi‑level library, classrooms, a restaurant and a public park open without a ticket.
  • After pandemic and construction delays and 2025 leadership changes with about 14% staff reductions, the project now has a firm date and roughly 10 months to complete interior build‑out and installations.
