Lucas Museum of Narrative Art Sets Sept. 22, 2026 Opening in L.A.

The long-delayed Los Angeles museum now shifts from construction to installing its 40,000-piece collection.

Overview

  • The Exposition Park campus spans 300,000 square feet with 35 galleries and 100,000 square feet of exhibition space in a Ma Yansong–designed building.
  • The collection covers fine art, comics, and photography, and includes the Lucas Archives of film models, props, costumes, and other artifacts from George Lucas’ career.
  • The site includes two theaters, a research library, classrooms, a restaurant and café, and an 11-acre Mia Lehrer–designed park open to the public from sunrise to sunset.
  • The project’s target opening moved from 2021 to 2023 to 2025 before settling on 2026, with the budget commonly reported at about $1 billion.
  • Leadership shifted in 2025 as director Sandra Jackson-Dumont departed, George Lucas assumed content direction, Jim Gianopulos became interim CEO, and roughly 14% of full-time staff were laid off while exterior construction and landscaping advanced.
