László Krasznahorkai Awarded 2025 Nobel Prize in Literature

The Swedish Academy cited his visionary oeuvre that confronts apocalyptic terror to reaffirm the power of art.

Overview

  • The Academy honored the 71-year-old Hungarian “for his compelling and visionary oeuvre that, in the midst of apocalyptic terror, reaffirms the power of art.”
  • The prize includes 11 million Swedish kronor, an 18-carat gold medal and a diploma, to be presented in Stockholm on December 10 by King Carl XVI Gustaf.
  • Betting markets had Can Xue and Krasznahorkai as joint favorites, while aggregated odds at Nicerodds at times placed Amitav Ghosh at the top.
  • The 2025 selection was handled by a six-member Swedish Academy jury chaired by Anders Olsson with Ellen Mattsson, Anne Swärd, Steve Sem-Sandberg, Anna-Karin Palm and secretary Mats Malm, and deliberation records remain sealed for 50 years.
  • Coverage highlighted ongoing representation concerns, noting only 18 women among 122 literature laureates and last year’s winner Han Kang as the first Asian woman recipient.
