Loyola Announces Services for Sister Jean, 106, Beloved Basketball Chaplain

The nun who became a national figure in Loyola Chicago’s 2018 Final Four run died last week.

Overview

  • A wake service and visitation will be held Oct. 15 at Madonna della Strada Chapel on Loyola’s Lake Shore campus, with the chapel opening at 4 p.m., the wake at 5 p.m., and visitation from 5:30 to 10 p.m.
  • A Funeral Mass is scheduled for Oct. 16 at 10 a.m. at the same chapel, which opens at 9 a.m. and will seat attendees on a first-come basis.
  • Overflow seating for the Funeral Mass will be available at Rooney Hall in the Mundelein Center, with a community reception to follow at the Damen Student Center as space allows.
  • Both the wake and the Funeral Mass will be livestreamed on Loyola’s website for those unable to attend in person.
  • Loyola said Sister Jean stepped back from official duties in August for health reasons but remained an adviser in her final months; she was 106 at the time of her death and authored a 2023 memoir.
