Lower Saxony Christmas Markets Open Weeks Early

Organisers say opening markets in late October attracts visitors sooner to extend sales into January.

Overview

  • In late October the Lüneburg Winterzauber am Bergström opened to the public and will run daily from 11:00 to 23:00 through January 10.
  • The Lüneburg market offers typical seasonal items such as Glühwein, Punsch, hot chocolate and crêpes with visitors reporting prices around €5 for a cup of Glühwein.
  • Event organiser Wilfried Voß defended the early start as a response to demand and local retail already showing Christmas goods.
  • A separate weekend Winterzauber at Schloss Herrenhausen in Hannover is already operating with about 120 exhibitors selling crafts, decorations and food.
  • Most Lower Saxony markets still plan traditional late-November openings, but several smaller and new markets are scheduled to follow the early Lüneburg example, which could shift tourist flows and vendor planning for the season.
