Low-Pressure Off Sri Lanka to Revive Northeast Monsoon, Bringing Heavy Rains to Tamil Nadu Nov 16–19

A new low-pressure area near the Sri Lankan coast is set to intensify rainfall over the delta and coastal belts, prompting official alerts and readiness measures across districts.

Overview

  • The Regional Meteorological Centre issued an orange alert for Sunday for Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam and the Karaikal area, warning of very heavy rain up to 12–20 cm.
  • Rainfall is forecast to expand along the coast from Monday, with Chennai and neighbouring districts likely to see a spell of heavy rain on Monday and Tuesday.
  • Tamil Nadu’s government urged district administrations to take precautionary steps as IMD bulletins flag heavy to very heavy rain over northeast, delta and coastal districts over the next four days.
  • Fishermen were advised to stay off the sea with squally winds of 35–45 km/h and gusts to 55 km/h expected along the Tamil Nadu coast, Gulf of Mannar and adjoining Comorin area.
  • The wet spell follows an upper-air cyclonic circulation evolving into a low-pressure area, with recent readings including 8 cm at Tiruchendur and 7 cm at Mandapam, and advisories warning of waterlogging, traffic disruption and isolated thunderstorms.
