Low Cloud Foils Helicopter in Lake District Rescues as Teams Carry Casualties Off the Fells

Poor visibility forced rescuers to carry casualties off the fells.

Overview

  • Wasdale Mountain Rescue Team responded on January 10 after a walker injured his ankle near Ill Crag and could not continue.
  • An air asset could not reach the Wasdale casualty due to the cloud base, so teams were uplifted to Lingmell Col and stretchered him to Wasdale Head.
  • The Wasdale operation ran about 9 hours 35 minutes to roughly 11:30pm, involved 20 volunteers, and drew support from RAF Mountain Rescue Service RAF Leeming and MCA Rescue 199.
  • The injured walker was taken to hospital by members of his party after the ground evacuation, with no further condition update reported.
  • Patterdale Mountain Rescue Team rescued a camper on January 11 on Nethermost Pike during severe wind and snow, a 10-hour effort involving 28 team members with support from Penrith MRT and the Coastguard after a helicopter was stood down.
