Louisville Basketball Edges Out UMBC 94-93 in Season Opener, Honors Late Former Coach Denny Crum

  • Mike James, sophomore guard for the Louisville Cardinals, scored 25 points, with 14 coming in the second half, leading his team to a narrow 94-93 victory over UMBC in the season opener.
  • Despite being down by eight points with a little more than nine minutes left on the clock, the Cardinals managed to rally back, with JJ Traynor scoring a crucial dunk in the last seven seconds of the game.
  • In addition to James' 25 points, other significant contributions were made by senior forward JJ Traynor and freshman Ty-Laur Johnson with 13 and 12 points respectively. Sophomore guards Tre White and Skyy Clark each scored 11 points.
  • UMBC's sophomore Dion Brown led all scorers with 28 points, followed by junior Bryce Johnson with 21 points. Senior Khydarius Smith added 13 points and five rebounds off the bench.
  • The game also served as an occasion to honor late Coach Denny Crum with a moment of silence and a halftime dedication. The school marked Crum's usual seat black amid a sea of red seats in the arena.
