Louisiana Boy, 5, Fatally Struck in Driveway as Grandmother Is Charged With Vehicular Homicide

Police cite a drug recognition expert’s finding of impairment from alcohol plus central nervous system depressants.

Overview

  • Carson Lawson, 5, was hit in his family’s Slidell driveway shortly after 7 a.m. as he waited for the school bus in front of a 2016 GMC Yukon that had been backed into the drive.
  • Driver Kristen Anders, 55, the child’s grandmother, was arrested at the scene and booked into the St. Tammany Parish Jail on a vehicular homicide charge with bail set at $50,000.
  • Investigators say Anders was unaware the boy was outside, stopped immediately after the impact, and has been cooperating with police.
  • The St. Tammany Parish Coroner’s Office identified the victim and scheduled an autopsy, with toxicology and other forensic work ongoing.
  • Carson’s mother issued her first public statement on social media, requesting privacy as funeral arrangements are prepared in Slidell and Jonesboro, Georgia.
