Overview
- Normal refrigerators make soft sounds from the compressor, refrigerant flow and fan clicks, but very loud noise or strong vibration is not normal and means a fault should be checked.
- Frequent causes of loud noise include an unlevel cabinet, a freezer fan hitting ice, loose shelves or glassware, worn rubber motor mounts, a misaligned drip tray, or the unit sitting too close to the wall.
- Start with basic DIY checks: unplug the fridge, level it by adjusting the feet, defrost the freezer if ice is present, secure or reposition shelves and containers, and reseat the drip tray.
- Monthly maintenance helps prevent problems: unplug and wash removable parts with water and white vinegar, clear dust from coils and clean door gaskets, and keep a few inches of space behind the appliance to cut vibration transfer.
- If these steps do not stop the noise, replace worn mounts or call a technician for motor, fan or compressor inspection to avoid further damage and higher repair costs.
