Lorry Driver Uses Truck to Help Save Man Dangling From M1 Bridge

Police say officers led the man to safety with help from a passerby, with no injuries reported.

Overview

  • The incident unfolded at about 6:30pm on 6 September at the Palterton Lane bridge near junction 29 of the M1, according to Derbyshire Police.
  • Driver Dan Shillito, 34, from Hull, positioned his lorry under the bridge and supported the man’s legs on his shoulders until officers secured him.
  • Officers joined Shillito on the truck, brought the man onto the vehicle and then guided him to an ambulance for hospital checks.
  • A section of the motorway was closed during the rescue and reopened once emergency crews cleared the scene.
  • Footage shared online drew millions of views, and Shillito says he received hundreds of messages, including a note from the man’s son thanking him.
