Looting and Vandalism Hit Nearly 300 Mexican Schools During Summer Break

Mexicanos Primero is urging authorities to reinforce security measures to protect schools still exposed during the summer break.

Overview

  • The NGO recorded 288 incidents of looting and vandalism in the first four weeks of summer vacation across nine states.
  • Affected schools span Aguascalientes, Chihuahua, Durango, Guerrero, Jalisco, Morelos, Nuevo León, Sinaloa and Tabasco.
  • Stolen items include computers, air conditioners, wiring, water-pump motors and bathroom fixtures, undermining basic services.
  • Many campuses lack perimeter walls, cameras or patrols, and some were looted multiple times during the 2024–2025 school year.
  • States such as Coahuila, Guerrero, Hidalgo and Jalisco have bolstered security while communities elsewhere install protections and report suspicious activity to 911.
