Longtime Olympic legend and pioneer Herb Douglas dead at 101

  • Herb Douglas, who won a bronze medal in the long jump at the 1948 Olympics, has died at the age of 101.
  • Douglas was one of the first African-Americans to play football for the University of Pittsburgh and won several intercollegiate and AAU championships in the long jump.
  • Douglas met Jesse Owens as a teenager and was encouraged by him to pursue education and athletics.
  • Douglas established a scholarship and mentored track star Roger Kingdom, who went on to win gold in the 110-meter hurdles at the 1984 and 1988 Olympics.
  • The University of Pittsburgh is naming the 300-meter indoor track at its planned Victory Heights facility after Douglas.
