Long-Lost 1613 Rubens of Christ on the Cross Authenticated in Paris

Following technical tests plus provenance checks, the canvas is slated for a November 30 auction.

Overview

  • The work surfaced during a September 2024 inventory of a private mansion in Paris’s 6th arrondissement by auctioneer Jean-Pierre Osenat.
  • Authentication is attributed to Professor Nils Büttner, president of the Antwerp-based Rubenianum, according to Osenat.
  • A committee traced the painting’s record via an earlier engraving and ran X-ray imaging plus pigment analysis.
  • The oil on canvas measures 105.5 by 72.5 centimeters and is reported to be in very good condition.
  • Provenance is believed to include 19th-century painter William-Adolphe Bouguereau before passing to the mansion’s owners.
