Overview

  • The Long Lake blaze grew from about 11 km² to nearly 20 km² overnight and remains uncontrolled in Annapolis County
  • More than 100 homes are evacuated under a local state of emergency as crews build firebreaks and deploy hoses and sprinklers around at-risk areas
  • Response teams include dozens of Nova Scotia DNR staff and volunteer firefighters alongside mutual-aid crews from Prince Edward Island and Ontario plus contracted helicopters and four fixed-wing air tankers
  • Environment Canada forecasts up to 15 mm of rain but officials caution it won’t penetrate drought-hardened ground or halt the fire without several days of steady showers
  • Federal emergency management has approved Nova Scotia’s assistance request and Public Safety’s Government Operations Centre is coordinating with the Canadian Armed Forces for additional support
