Overview

  • The Long Lake fire in Annapolis County expanded from about 11 km2 to nearly 20 km2 by early Monday, remaining out of control and advancing toward West Dalhousie Road.
  • More than 100 homes have been evacuated under a municipal state of emergency as crews build firebreaks and deploy sprinklers and hoses to protect at-risk properties.
  • Over 100 wildland firefighters from Nova Scotia, Ontario and Prince Edward Island are joined by 120 volunteer fire department members and supported by two helicopters and four fixed-wing water bombers.
  • Federal Emergency Management Minister Eleanor Olszewski approved a request for Canadian Armed Forces and other federal resources to bolster provincial suppression efforts.
  • Cooler weather in Newfoundland and Labrador has allowed firefighters to steady several large blazes, including the 95 km2 Kingston/Conception Bay fire, and led authorities to lift evacuation alerts around St. John’s despite over 100 structures lost.
