Long Island Woman Convicted of Aggravated Manslaughter in Drunken Hit-and-Run Death of NYPD Detective Tsakos

Jessica Beauvais could face up to 27 years in prison for striking and killing Detective Anastasios Tsakos after drinking and taking marijuana; the detective left behind a grieving widow and two young children.

  • Jessica Beauvais of Hempstead was convicted on Tuesday of aggravated manslaughter in the death of NYPD Detective Anastasios Tsakos, a 14-year veteran of the police department, who was assisting officers at a crash scene on the Long Island Expressway.
  • Beauvais, 34, was intoxicated, had been smoking marijuana, and was driving with a suspended license at the time of the incident. After striking the detective, she attempted to flee the scene but was arrested shortly after.
  • The collision, which occurred at approximately 2 a.m. on April 27, 2021, resulted in the detective being thrown into the air and severely injured, tragically leading to his death.
  • According to the court hearing, Beauvais had been driving at high speed, under the influence. CCTV footage and tests confirmed her blood alcohol level was .15, almost twice the legal limit, when she was apprehended.
  • Detective Tsakos leaves behind a grieving widow and two young children. The tragedy prompted discussions about the risks police officers face while on duty, with traffic-related fatalities being a leading cause of death among law enforcement.
