Long-Billed Vulture Released in Pench Travels 750 Km to Near Nashik

GPS tracking under the BNHSMaharashtra reintroduction is informing real-time evaluation of survival.

Overview

  • BNHS data show J132 reached about 38 km from Anjaneri in Nashik on December 27 after roughly 15–17 days in flight.
  • The tagged bird followed a route through Nagpur, Wardha, Yavatmal, Hingoli, Washim, Buldhana, Jalna and Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar.
  • Activity readings indicate evening roosting, morning feeding and at least two full meals during the journey.
  • Fourteen captive-bred vultures from Pinjore were trained for eight months at a Pench aviary and released on December 11 with GPS/GSM tags; all were seen feeding with wild vultures in the reserve from December 12–15.
  • Another long-billed vulture from the cohort has reached Dhanora in Gadchiroli as officials continue monitoring, share updates with regional forest units and keep precise roosts confidential for safety, with further releases prepared for other reserves.
