Long Beach Terminal Reopens After 75 Containers Fall From Cargo Ship Mississippi

A joint Coast Guard–NTSB probe is underway during container recovery inside a harbor safety zone.

Overview

  • Officials said 75 containers went overboard from the Portugal-flagged Mississippi during unloading at Pier G, with no injuries reported.
  • An emissions-capture barge alongside was struck and damaged, and a sheen was observed from the barge, though no hazardous materials have been identified.
  • Pier G operations were halted Tuesday, but port leaders said overall activity has resumed as a 500-yard exclusion zone remains in place.
  • Crews are corralling floating containers, using sonar to locate an estimated 25 to 30 that sank, planning crane recoveries, and stabilizing leaning stacks on the ship.
  • The vessel arrived from Yantian with consumer goods bound for U.S. retailers; Flexport said 20 clients had cargo in 36 affected containers and is coordinating with carrier ZIM.
