Long Beach Father, Stepmother Arrested on Suspicion of Torture and Murder in 14-Month-Old’s Death

Detectives plan to bring the case to Los Angeles County prosecutors next week for charging review.

  • Long Beach police arrested Alfredo Munoz, 40, and Kelly Munoz, 34, on Nov. 25 in the 200 block of East Louise Street and booked them without bail on suspicion of murder, torture and child abuse causing death.
  • The investigation began Nov. 7 after the child was found unresponsive with signs of trauma at a hospital, was placed on life support, and died on Nov. 10.
  • Homicide and child-abuse detectives, working with DCFS, concluded after about two weeks that the toddler had suffered ongoing abuse in the household, according to police.
  • Detectives will present their findings to the Los Angeles County District Attorney next week for filing consideration.
  • Court records show Alfredo Munoz was sentenced in December 2021 to four years in state prison after a no-contest plea to willful cruelty to a child.
