Lone Mountain Nevada Temple Breaks Ground in Las Vegas

City approvals with a court ruling shape a scaled-back design as construction begins.

Overview

  • The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints held a Sept. 25 groundbreaking presided over by Elder Michael A. Dunn, who offered a dedicatory prayer for the site and construction.
  • Current plans call for a three-story temple of about 70,194 square feet with a 196-foot steeple on nearly 20 acres near North Grand Canyon Drive in the Lone Mountain area.
  • The house of worship will become Nevada’s fourth temple and the second serving the Las Vegas valley.
  • Design and lighting were reduced to meet local requirements, including a Feb. 5 ordinance limiting lighting temperature, timing and height, and no Angel Moroni statue is planned.
  • The Las Vegas City Council approved the project unanimously, a district court upheld that approval, and opponents have signaled an appeal to the Nevada Supreme Court, with the Elko Nevada Temple set for dedication on Oct. 12.
