London Underground Largely Shuts as Weeklong RMT Strikes Begin

The shutdown reflects a pay and hours dispute that TfL says it cannot afford to resolve by cutting the working week.

Overview

  • Little to no Tube service is expected from Monday to Thursday after a limited Sunday, with a phased restart planned from 8am on Friday.
  • The Docklands Light Railway will not run on Tuesday and Thursday, while the Elizabeth line, Overground and buses are operating but heavily crowded, with some Elizabeth line stations not served before 7:30am and after 10:30pm on strike days.
  • The RMT is seeking a move from a 35‑hour to a 32‑hour week and stronger fatigue management, as TfL maintains its 3.4% pay offer and says cutting hours is unaffordable.
  • The union cites about 2,000 fewer Underground staff since 2018 and says it remains open to talks, though no fresh negotiations were confirmed on Monday.
  • Major events including concerts have been rescheduled and one think-tank estimates the direct economic hit could exceed £230 million.
