London to Raise Congestion Charge to £18, End Full EV Exemption From January 2026

Officials cite congestion control based on TfL modelling showing higher traffic without action.

Overview

  • The daily levy increases to £18 on January 2, 2026, and battery-electric vehicles will no longer receive a full waiver.
  • Electric cars will get a 25% discount and electric vans and lorries 50%, which equates to £13.50 for cars and £9 for vans at the new rate.
  • From March 2030, discounts tighten further to 12.5% for electric cars and 25% for electric vans and lorries.
  • Resident reductions of up to 90% remain, but people moving into the zone after March 1, 2027 generally will not qualify unless using an electric vehicle.
  • TfL expects nearly one in five vehicles in the zone to be electric by year-end and says about 2,200 extra weekday entries would occur without the changes, drawing criticism from the AA and EV advisers.
