Overview
- From January 2, 2026, drivers of petrol and diesel vehicles will pay £18 a day, electric cars will pay £13.50, and electric vans and lorries will pay £9 to enter central London.
- The current 100% EV discount is replaced with a 25% reduction for electric cars and a 50% reduction for electric vans and lorries, with further cuts from March 2030 to 12.5% and 25% respectively.
- From March 1, 2027, the 90% residents’ discount will apply only to EV owners, and people moving into the zone after that date will receive a discount only if they use an electric vehicle.
- Transport for London cites rapid EV growth—approaching a fifth of vehicles in the zone—and warns that without reform average weekday traffic would rise by about 2,200 vehicles.
- Motoring and industry groups including the AA, Electrifying.com and the GMB union criticize the move as penalizing early EV adopters and low‑margin workers, while separate reports suggest the chancellor may consider a national pay‑as‑you‑drive charge for EVs.
