London Police Detain 890 at Sit-In Backing Banned Palestine Action

The mass detentions underscore a contested terror ban now headed back to court on 25 September.

Overview

  • Metropolitan Police arrested about 890 people outside Parliament for alleged support of a proscribed organisation, with most released shortly afterward.
  • Defend Our Juries said more than 1,500 people joined the sit-in to express solidarity with Palestine Action.
  • Police reported officers were punched, kicked and spat at and said 17 arrests related to violent conduct, while organisers alleged heavy-handed tactics against largely peaceful, often elderly protesters.
  • A separate pro-Palestine march drew an estimated 20,000 people elsewhere in London the same day.
  • The government banned Palestine Action in July after an RAF vandalism incident, making support punishable by up to 14 years, and a High Court ruling in the group’s favor now faces a government appeal on 25 September.
