Overview
- Nine PEEQUAL urinals at the marathon's yellow start will collect approximately 1,000 litres of urine from female runners for recycling.
- The urine will be processed by NPK Recovery into a liquid fertiliser using bacteria to extract nutrients like nitrogen and phosphorus.
- This fertiliser will be tested on wheat crops, with the collected urine potentially contributing to the growth of wheat for around 195 loaves of bread.
- This marks the third year of PEEQUAL's female-specific urinals at the London Marathon, which reduce queuing times by 2.7 times compared to standard portable toilets.
- The initiative aligns with the London Marathon's sustainability goals, aiming to find onward uses for event waste and reduce its carbon footprint.
